What is a Japanese Knot bag? It is a bag that has a long handle and a short handle. You put the long handle through the short handle to close up the bag.
I have made many different variations of the bag. But I wanted to make a Japanese knot bag that I did not have to sew on handles.
You still have to sew up the side seam when you are done, oh well. At least you only have to sew one time.
I used Big Twist Gigi yarn for this bag. It turned out cute, but it is an acrylic yarn. I prefer to use cotton yarn or t-shirt yarn for bags
This works from one side to the other.
ch 90
Foundation row, sc in the 61th ch from the hook. the 60 chs that you skipped make up the handle.
Row 1: sc in the remaining 29 stitches, 30 sc along the other side of the foundation chain.
sc along the 60 chains that make up the handle. Join with the first sc and turn.
Row 2-5: sc in each stitch across. Join with the first sc and turn.
Row 6: slip stitch in next 60 sc of the handle, sc in the remaining stitches. The long handle is done. ch 1 turn
Row 7 - 26: sc in each of the 60 stitches that make up the bag. ch 1, turn
Make the short handle
At the end of row 26, ch 30 and join with the first sc, ch 1 and turn.
Row 27-31: sc in every stitch, join with the first sc and turn.
Row 32: sc in the 60 sc of the bag, slip stitch in the 30 sc for the small handle.
Sew up the side of the bag and finish off.
Want to make it bigger? add more chains at the beginning keep track how many chains are going to be the bag and the long handle. After the long handle is done, add more rows to the bag part to make it wider.
It is your bag, adjust the pattern as you like. I hope that this gave you a road map on how to make this version of a Japanese Knot Bag.
