My chain sock is a sock that is both knitted and crocheted. I wanted to see if it could be done and I was surprised on how well the sock turn out so here is the pattern I used:
Material:
Fingering/Sock yarn
Double Pointed (DP) Needles - size 0
crochet hook - size 2
Rib pattern:
Rows 1-3: K3, P1
Rows 4-6: P1 *K1, P3* repeat until last three, K1, P2.
Repeat 6 row pattern
Crocheted pattern:
sc in next sc ,skip next 3 ch, ch 3, sc in next sc
Starting at the cuff:
Cast on 60 stitches
Knit rib pattern for 1-2 inch or desired length.
Bind off the 60 stitches. Insert last loop into crochet hook. Proceed to crochet the leg. Do Not Join, rounds are continuous.
ch1, *SC in next stitch, skip next 3 stitches, ch3, sc in next stitch* around. there twelve ch 3 spaces.
Repeat the established crochet pattern until you have desired leg length.
Heal Flap - knitted
Put loop onto knitting needle, turn (WS facing) and pick up 29 additional stitches(along six sc,ch3,sc pattern stitches),turn.
Row 1: Slip 1, Knit, turn
Row 2: Slip 1, Purl, turn
Repeat these two rows until you have 28 rows completed
Heal Turn:
S1,K14,SSK,K1
S1,P1,P2Tog,P1
S1,K2,SSK,K1
S1,P3,P2TOG,P1
Continue in this manner until all the stitches are worked. You should have 16 stitches on the needle
Foot - Top is crocheted, bottom is knitted:
Knit next 8 stitches (needle one). Knit the remaining 8 stitches on another DP needle and pick up 15 stitches along side the heel flap (needle two).
Crocheting the top of the foot:
With the crochet hook, pick a loop between the last knitted stitch and the first SC. Follow crocheted pattern for top of foot. Put crochet loop on DP needle pick up 14 stitches alongside of heel flap and knit the 8 stitches from the first needle.
You have 23 stitches on needle one and two and 30 crocheted stitches for the top of the foot
Repeat these next two rows until you have decreased 16 stitches and have 30 knitted stitches remaining (15 on each knitted needle)
Row 1: Knit to last three stitches on needle one, K2Tog, K1. With crochet hook pick up stitch between last knitted stitch and first SC. Follow established crochet pattern for top of foot. Put loop on DP needle, knit next stitch, slip loop over knitted stitch, SSK, knit remaining stitches
Row 2: Knit. With crochet hook pick up stitch between last knitted stitch and first SC. Follow established crochet pattern for top of foot. Put loop on DP needle, knit next stitch, slip loop over knitted stitch,Knit remaining stitches.
Once the decreases are done follow row two until you have the desired foot length.
Toe - knitted:
Knit along needle one, with DP needle pick 30 stitches along crocheted pattern. NOTE: This will now be needle two. Knit along final needle, now needle three.
Starting with needle 1, k until you get to the last three stitches, k2tog and k the last stitch.
On needle two k first stitch, slip the next stitch, k, and pass the slipped stitch over the k stitch. k until the last three stitches, then k2tog, k.
On need three k first stitch, slip the next stitch, k, and pass the slipped stitch over the k stitch and k til end
Second row:
Knit on all three needles
repeat row one and two until 28 stitches remain.
Close with Kitchener stitch.
