Place Mat

This latest project was based off a pattern found in the November 1957 Workbasket Magazine.
The original pattern calls for Knit-Cro Sheen, I used Artiste (found at Hobby Lobby), because it is a thicker thread I had to adjust the pattern accordingly. So what I did was make a dc row (about 70), 2 tr rows. The pattern has you repeat the dc row followed by the 2 tr rows for about 11 inches then you end on the dc row. I have three different color panels in my place mat because I just did not have enough of one color. I did chains of 120 and weaved the pattern in according to the directions in the pattern.

The singe crochet edge keeps the weaved chains in place. I am still not quite finished with this, I still have to finish off the ends of all chains *sigh*.
I should make at least three more to have a set of four. Not going to happen. If I make this again in the future, I would use this pattern a make a bath mat using cotton yarn.

  1. It is beautiful! I can understand not wanting to make a complete set, with how detailed it got.

  3. Ditto: Quite lovely, but completely understand your dilemma.

Perhaps you could use a much simpler stitch and make 4 mats out of the key colors in this mat. Use the new ones as placemats, use the existing one as a "centerpiece" mat.

  4. That is a great idea - to make the special one the centrepiece. It looks wonderful. I love old publications - there are some real treasures in them.

  5. Don't you just love using vintage patterns I have a stash from my grandmother and my husbands grandmother and although I haven't used very many of the patterns yet, there are many many on my "to knit some day" list.

  7. Very cool! It does look very complicated and time-consuming, so I totally get not making a whole set! ;-)
