Squishy Socks

The journey in starting to make these socks started with sock yarn and wanting to make a pair of socks. I started to knit a pair, but I ended up tearing it out and started to make these crochet squishy socks. Funny thing is, I made a similar pair back in 2016. I had forgotten I made these and thought it was funny that I am making these socks again.

These socks are done in in front post and back post double crochets. I would not consider this a beginner pattern. It does not mean that beginners can't do this. If you are not familiar with front post and back post double crochet or how socks are constructed, making these socks could be a journey. It was definitely a journey making the pattern. The socks pictured turned out a little big for me, so I am now at the last minute scaling the pattern back to be smaller than I had originally written it. I have a size 8 foot (US), the socks are going to be for about that size foot. So if you are ready for the pattern, here it is:

Materials:
Kroy Sock yarn
Size B crochet hook

These are toes up socks.

Create either a magic ring or chain 4 to make a ring.
chain 3, (counts as a dc, will represent as a back post dc (BPDC))11 more dc in ring (12 total), slip stitch with chain 3
Row 1: chain 3, do front post dc (FPDC) around chain 3, *dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc* repeat around. slip stitch with chain 3 (24 dc)

Row 2: chain 3, FPDC around chain 3, dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc. (increase) *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 5 times, * dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc* twice, *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 5 times. slip stitch with chain 3 (28 dc)

Row 3: chain 3, FPDC around chain 3, dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc. *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 6 times, *dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc* twice, *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 6 times. slip stitch with chain 3 (32 dc)

Row 4:  chain 3, FPDC around chain 3, dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc. *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 7 times, *dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc* twice, *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* 7 times. slip stitch with chain 3 (36 dc)

Row 5: chain 3, *FPDC around next FPDC, BPDC around next BPDC* repeat around ending with a FPBC around the last dc. slip stitch with chain 3

Repeat row 5 until about 3 inches from the heal. It is likely to the middle arch of the foot.

Make the heal flap, which is underneath the heel instead of back of heel like traditional sock that are done cuff down:
Turn sock
Chain 3,FPDC around the FPDC's, BPDC's around the BPDC's until half (18) are done, leave remain 18 unworked (top of sock)
Repeat row until you have 9 rows completed.

Heal turn:
Row 1: Chain 3,*FPDC around FPBC ,BPDC around BPDC ,* in the next 8 stitches, BPDC  around next 2 stitches , BPDC in the next stitch, Leave remaining 6 unworked, turn

Row 2: Chain 3 , FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next 2 stitches, BPDC around next BPBC Leave remaining 6 unworked.

Row 3:Chain 3 ,FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC,  FPDC  around chain 3 and around  next FPDC in the row below, BPDC around next BPBC, turn

Row 4: Chain 3, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC  around chain 3 and around next FPDC  in the row below, BPDC around next BPBC, turn

Row 5: Chain 3, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC,  BPDC around chain 3 and FPDC  in the row below, BPDC around the next BPDC

Row 6: Chain 3 ,FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC,FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC,  FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around chain 3 and FPDC  in the row below BPDC around the next BPDC  turn

Row 7: Chain 3 ,FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC,FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC,  FPDC around next FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC  around chain 3 and around next FPDC  in the row below, BPDC around the chain 3 in the row below, turn

Row 8: Chain 3, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC around FPBC, BPDC around next BPBC, FPDC  around chain 3 and around next FPDC  in the row below, BPDC around the chain 3 in the row below, turn

Chain 3, do even front post and back post dc in the next 9 BPDC and FPBC's, end with BPDC. Make 9 dc along heal flap, mark the 9th dc, Continue pattern along the top of the sock,  Make 9 dc along the other side of the flap, marking the first dc, slip stitch chain 3. Move onto the Starting decrease.

*Note: After making another sock, I notices that I have holes or gaps when I have the 9 dc's along the heel flap edge. I am going to try doing single or half double crochets along the heel flap edge to see if it make a difference.

Starting decrease

Keeping with the FPDC and BPDC pattern:
Note: At this point the chain 3 is a FPDC. Since I would like to keep my chain 3's as BPDC, slip stich to a BPDC (which is likely the next stitch)  Just make sure you do a FPDC around the chain 3 from the previous row.
Chain 3, do established pattern until one before marker, FBDC the next two stitches, do established pattern along the top until reach the next marker, FBDC in the next two stitches, do established pattern  and slip stitch with the beginning chain 3. Repeat this row until you are back to 36 stitches.

Chain 3, do the establish pattern even around, slip stitch with chain 3. Repeat this row until you have the desired cuff length.   Finish off

Now for the hard part, you have to make another one.
