Scrubbies

Edit January 9, 2022: I have a video for this now at the bottom of the post.

I have recently discovered the thermal stitch and I love the results it makes. These dish scrubbies were made using the thermal stitch.  The first ones have a bumpy texture on one side, and I did one with a bumpy texture on both sides. I like the one with the bumpy texture on one side. I will have a pattern later in this post.
I had bought some scrubby yarn recently. I had bought this type of yarn in the past and found it hard to crochet with. So, I was reminded that it is still hard to work with.  I did the thermal stitch with just the scrubby yarn. I also did one with another strand of cotton yarn.  I like one with two stands of cotton yarn because it is really thick and almost like a sponge. I have used the dish scrubbies my kitchen for a while now and are really functional.

This one has two strands of cotton yarn.
Here is a video I found on You Tube that shows how to do the Thermal Stitch. This particular You Tuber is from the U.K. and will use U.K. instructions. She will point that out in the video.

So here are the instructions on how I made the bumpy dish pad that is only bumpy on one side. If you are new to the thermal stitch, do watch the video it will make the instructions a little easier.

With cotton yarn and size G hook.

Chain 25 (this amount is flexible, just start out with an odd number of chains)
Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and all the chain across. If you have watched the video, sc in the back chain.

Row 2: chain 1, sc in the back loop AND in the foundation chain, dc in the back loop AND in the foundation chain.  Repeat across.

Row 3: chain 1, sc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row, repeat across.

Row 4: chain 1, dc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row, sc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row. Repeat across.

Row 5: chain 1, sc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row, repeat across.
Row 6: chain 1, sc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row, dc in the back loop AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row. Repeat across.

Repeat Rows 4-6 until you have the desired width.

Final row: chain 1, sc in both loops AND in the free loop of the stitch from the previous row. repeat across. Finish off.

If you want to have it bumpy on both sides, do row 2 of the pattern for the first two rows, followed by doing row 4 of the pattern for the next two rows. When it comes to the last row, make sure you go through both loops of the stitch and free loop of the stitch below.

The possibilities are endless using the thermal stitch.

Comments

  1. First time I have heard these called scrubbies. My mom used to make lots of dish clothes for people but I don't remember them having the bumpy texture on one side. That would definitely get the scrubbing done a lot easier. Thanks so much for sharing this week at #HomeMattersParty

  2. I like the Scrubbies and if I thought I could relearn to Crochet which I did as a child I would teach my son for Homeschool Art Class but neither of us have the patience for Crocheting.
