Wavy Shelled Hat Pattern

I finally came up with a pattern for the Wavy Shelled Hat. Because it had been years since I had done this hat, I had to recreate it again by just looking at the picture.

Because it had been so long. I had made a few versions before I had come across the one I had originally made.

Every other row is worked in back loops to give this hat an interesting texture. I had done this hat in one color, but I like changing the color every other row.  This hat has one row of shell patterned and another row of single crochet done in back loops. This hat has the option of having a brim or no brim. Both are equally cute

Materials:

Worsted Weight Yarn (size 4).

Size H hook

Row 1: chain 2 (doesn't count as dc) 12 dc in a magic ring, or chain 4 and join with first chain to make a ring. Join with first dc. ch 1

Row 2: Working in back loops, two sc in each stitch, join with the first sc, ch 1

Row 3: Working in both loops, sc in the same stitch as joined, skip 1 stitch,  [5 dc in the next stitch (shell made), skip 1, sc in the next stitch, skip 1] repeat around ending with 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1, slip stitch with first sc. ch 1 (6 shells)

Row 4:Working in back loops,  sc in each stitch around, join with first stitch, ch 3

Row 5: Working in both loops, 2 dc in the in the same stitch as joined, [skip 1, sc in the next stitch, skip 1, 5 dc in the next stitch (shell), skip 1] repeat around, end with skip 1, sc in the next stitch, skip one, 2 dc in the same stitch as the ch3 and 2dc at the beginning.  Join top of chain 3. This completes the shell., ch 1. (9 shells)

Image of last 2 dc of the row is done in the same stitch as the beginning ch3 and 2 dc to complete the shell.

Row 6: (increasing only 2 stitches this row) Working in back loops, sc around,  increase 1 stitch at the beginning of the row and halfway through. Join with first stitch, ch 1

Row 7: Working in both loops, sc in the same stitch as joined, skip 1 stitch,  [5 dc in the next stitch (shell made), skip 1, sc in the next stitch] repeat around ending with 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1, slip stitch with the first sc. ch 1 (14 shells)

Row 8: Working in back loops, sc in the stitch just joined and in every stitch around. Join with first stitch, ch 3

Row 9:  Working in both loops, 2 dc in the same stitch as joined, [skip 2, sc in the next stitch, skip 2, 5 dc in the next stitch (shell), skip 2] repeat around, end with skip 2, sc in the next stitch, skip 2, 2 dc in the same stitch as the ch3 and 2dc.  Join top of chain 3. This completes the shell, ch 1.

Row 10: Working in back loops, sc in the stitch just joined and in every stitch around. Join with first stitch, ch 1

Row 11: Working in both loops, sc in the same stitch as joined, skip 2 stitches,  [5 dc in the next stitch (shell made), skip 2, sc in the next stitch] repeat around ending with 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 2, slip stitch with the first sc. ch 1

Repeat rows 8-11 until desired hat length, ending with a single crochet row. I had done 20 rows ending with row 8, but only ch 1 to start the brim.

Brim:

I worked in continuous rounds for the brim.

Row 1: [2sc in first sc, sc in the next 3] repeat around

Row 2-3: sc evenly around

Row 4: [2sc in first sc, sc in the next 3] repeat around

Row 5-6: sc evenly around

slip stitch in the next stitch and finish off.

OR maybe you don't want a brim at all, just finish off the hat at a single crochet row.

It feels good to finally write up a pattern for a project that I initially said I was going to do in a past blog post. There are many project I have done that I intended to write a pattern and haven't done so yet.

  2. I like this textured look, plus I bet it makes the hat warmer that way.
