I started out making this shawl with just a simple row of double crochet and chain 1 spaces. I only had 19 double crochet and chain 1 space. (I think that sums up to a starting foundation chain of 40.)
Before I get ahead of myself, I should mention that the yarn is It's A Wrap by Red Heart.
So I got to a point where it appears to be getting close to scarf length and I had plenty of yarn (which is very fine). So on a whim, I turned it on its side and did double crochet and chain 1 space in the spaces along the side. After about 7 rows, I turned again to work on the foundation row side for about 20 rows before turning it to work on the other long side. I kept working in this manner, turning the shawl every couple rows until I ran out of yarn. I did not add a border.

The yarn itself is very fine and have 3 strands running through it. In the end it is soft and comfortable to wear. The simple double crochet, chain one approach let the colors shine through. A busy pattern would of gotten lost in the colors.

Great idea!
