Crochet Stocking Hat

Edit Jab 2, 2021: I did this hat using a J hook. I have the H hook listed in the instructions. I like how the new hat worked out using the J hook. I should also note that the hat will be thick and bulky.

Over the past month or so I have been making stocking hats. I have made up a crocheted version using alternating front and back post dcs.

So here is how I made my hats.

You will need:
Size H hook
One 6-8 ounce skein of worst weight yarn

FPDC = Front Post DC. You are doing a DC around the DC on the previous round, bring the hook around the DC from the front.
BPDC = Back Post DC. You are doing a DC around the DC on the previous round, bring the hook around the DC from the back.

Chain 3, 7 dc in magic ring, or a ring of chain 4. Join with beginning chain 3 (8 DC)
Working in rounds.
Row 1: ch 3,  FPDC around beginning ch 3. *dc in next dc, FPDC around the same dc* repeat around, join with beginning chain 3

Row 2: ch 3, FPDC around next dc *BPDC around next dc, FPDC around next dc* repeat around, join with beginning chain 3

Row 3: ch 3, BPDC around the chain 3 *FPDC around next dc, dc in the same dc, dc in the next dc, BPDC around the same dc* repeat around ending with FPDC around next dc, dc in the same dc, join with beginning chain 3

Row 4: ch 3, BPDC around the next dc, *FPDC around the next 2 dc, BPDC around the next 2 dc* repeat around ending with FPDC around the next 2 dc, join with beginning chain 3

Row 5: ch 3, BPDC around next dc, *(FPDC around next dc, dc in the same dc) twice, BPDC in the next 2 dc* repeat around ending with (FPDC around next dc, dc in the same dc) twice,  join with beginning chain 3

Row 6: ch 3, BPDC around the next dc, *FPDC around the next 4 dc, BPDC around the next 2 dc* repeat around ending with FPDC around the next 4 dc, join with beginning chain 3

Row 7: ch 3, BPDC around beginning ch 3, dc in the next dc, BPDC around the same dc * FPDC around the next 4 dc, (dc in the next dc, BPDC around the same dc) twice* Repeat ending with FPDC around the next 4 dc, join with beginning chain 3

Row 8: ch 3, BPDC around next 3 dc, * FPDC around the next 4 dc, BPDC around the next 4 dc* repeat around ending with FPDC around the next 4 dc, join with beginning chain 3

Repeat row 8 until your hat measures about 8 inches or longer if you want to fold up and have a brim. Finish off.
