Handy Basket Tutorial with Video

I have seen many versions of crocheted baskets out there, so I thought I would make a version of my own. I was aiming for a square basket, this version has a square base. I was aiming for a cubical basket you could put in cubicles.

I have already made a couple of these baskets and these truly do come in handy when it comes to storing yarn and yarn-related projects and materials. Now I just need some cubical shelves to put them in.

The materials I used are

Worsted weight yarn, size 4. Hold two strands together I used about 800- 1000 yards or about 4 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver yarn.  In the video, I need 2 skeins of super saver stripes and one skein of the Caron One Pound yarn. I still have about 1/2 of the Caron yarn left.

Size I hook

4 stitch markers

Scissors, yarn needle, and tape measure

Beginning round:

Make a magic ring or a ring of about chain 4. ch1 and do 8 sc in the ring.

Working in continuous rounds.

Row 1: *3 sc in the next stitch, with a stitch marker, mark the second sc of the 3 sc group. sc in the next stitch*  repeat 3 more times

Row 2:   *sc in each sc until you are at a marker, 3 sc in the markered stitch, mark the second sc of the 3 sc group* repeat until you have gone through all the corners and finished the round.

Repeat row 2 until you have 120 stitches. the base should measure about 10 inches. Not a big deal if it doesn't

Make bottom edge.

slip stitch in the next stitch. sc AROUND the same sc and in each sc around

If you want, you could just work in the back loops instead

Make the sides of the basket.

Still working in continuous rounds and in both loops now, sc in each sc until the side measure about 9 inches.

Make the handles:

Row 1: Make sure you are at a corner, sc in the next 8 sc, chain 14, skip 14 sc, sc in the next 46 sc, chain 14, skip 14 sc, sc in the next remain sc.

Row 2: sc in each sc until the chain 14 space, 14 sc in the ch 14 space, sc until you reach the other 14 chain space, 14 sc in the ch 14 space,  sc in the remaining sc.

Row 3-4: sc in each sc.

Finish off by doing a slip stitch in the next stitch and sewing in the tail.

As I said earlier, I was aiming for a cubical basket. I believe most have only one handle so you could only make one handle. Or don't make a handle at all.

I have made three baskets already with only two strands. It does hold up and it is flexible enough that you could use it as a tote.

I did make a video, so here is the video tutorial:

  2. Julie, thanks so much for the video! I learned to crochet when I was about 7 during a hurricane power outage with my Granny. She never learned more than blankets and granny square blanket, so that's where my skills end. I see so many things I would like to try, but I don't know any of the terms that people abbreviate with other than single crochet and chain. This is something I'm definitely going to try when I get a spare moment. I'm featuring your basket on tomorrow's Crafty Creators. If you come by and let me know if you're following me on social media, I'll feature you there as well. I also have an "I was featured" button if you would like to grab it. Have a great rest of the week!
